Paul McCartney was the toast of the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, December 5 night as stars including Steven Tyler, No Doubt and Dave Grohl sang tributes to the Beatles legend.
The singer was applauded at the 33rd annual event, which recognizes artists who have enriched American culture. During the show, actor Alec Baldwin paid tribute to McCartney, telling the crowd, "His genius as a music maker is undisputed. But Paul also has a genius for life, and I think the two are related... Paul is kind, giving, thoughtful and funny."
No Doubt then performed a medley of Beatles hits, while Grohl teamed up with Norah Jones for a duet of "Maybe I'm Amazed", before Tyler also took the stage, after McCartney personally asked him to perform on his behalf.
TV mogul Oprah Winfrey was also hailed at the glitzy bash, with Julia Roberts saying, "It is a universal conversation starter: 'Did you see what was on Oprah today?' I think she's pretty damn close to perfect... fabulous, shining, margarita-drinking perfect."
U.S. President Barack Obama was also on hand to honor the talk show host, adding, "The more you know Oprah, the more spectacular you realize her character and her soul are, and the more you appreciate what a wonderful, gifted person she is."
Other highlights of the night included Jennifer Hudson's musical tribute to Winfrey, while country singer Merle Haggard was also celebrated with performances from Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock. Dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones and Broadway composer Jerry Herman were also honored at the Kennedy Center.
The show will be broadcast in the U.S. on December 28.
